It seems being overly generous in China not only wins you extra face, it may potentially land you in the morgue.  

Zhou Zhou and Wang Bo were university classmates who got on great even after graduating from university in 2010. Wang Bo would regularly invite Zhou Zhou for dinner, insisting on paying the bill each time. Unbeknownst to Wang Bo, this ignited extreme jealousy in Zhou who comes from an impoverished family of farmers.

During the dinners, Wang Bo would often talk about his job and salary prompting Zhou to interpret Wang’s insistence on paying the bill as a form of showing off. 

In May 2011, Wang visited Zhou in his rented apartment. After surfing the web for a while, Wang got tired and took a nap. Upon seeing his “friend” asleep, Zhou got overwhelmed with emotions and saw himself as a complete loser in comparison to Wang. As his friend snoozed, Zhou stabbed him to death. Not only that but Zhou chopped up his body to get rid of the evidence more easily. Police eventually tracked down Zhou however, and he was sentenced to death on April 25, 2013.
