The son of a multi-millionaire in Harbin has recently left home to embark on a month-long training programme to become a civil servant. Despite having a wealthy father, Haoyu has expressed jealousy at those who work in the service because according to him, the profession is “stable” and “highly respectable.” Haoyu, who is nearly 30, stated that his father told him their wealth should grant them “no status” in society, and that by being a civil servant Haoyu will gain good connections, learn valuable skills, and generally be a respectable individual. If Haoyu passes the exam, he will receive a monthly salary of 1000 RMB.
