A 49 year-old man from Henan province, surnamed Wang, was arrested earlier this year for catching 87 toads in the creek near his house in Zhumadian county.

The man committed the crime in the night between July 4 and July 5, was arrested on July 17, and prosecuted on July 29. He will be going to prison for three months on counts of hunting illegally and destructing wildlife.

According to a local newspaper, Wang is the first person to be convicted in China for catching too many toads.

As far as I know, toads are inedible. In fact, many are poisonous, so I'm not sure what he was planning on doing with them.

Yet the thousands of Chinese restaurants that sell endangered wildlife get off scott free. Coming from Henan is far worse a crime than catching toads.

And that's why the only "wildlife" I see in China is stray cats and dogs... even when I leave the city and go to the countryside.
