Location and Climate

Urumqi is a dry city with long winters and summers barely separated by short springs & autumns. In summer, the thermometer regularly hits 26C (79F), but in the winter this plunges to a freezing average minimum of -19C (-2.2F) in January. The temperature also fluctuates massively between day and night. Smart travelers should pack layers and a jacket even in the middle of summer: In winter, it would be hard to pack too many thermals!

The city sits in the centre of the massive northwestern province of Xinjiang at 86°3"East Longitude and 42°4" North Latitude, west of the gigantic Salt Lakes and close to the field dunes of the Zhunggar Basin.
