Lhasa Entertainment Overview

Even though the tourist industry has boosted Lhasa's economy in recent years, compared with other cities of China, the entertainment in Lhasa seems more low-key and simple. But the nightlife scene is changing every day as more and more tourists put Lhasa on their list of destinations.

The city now has a good choice of bars where people can meet and chat, and, as you would expect in a Chinese city, there are plenty of karaoke venues as well. The best area for this kind of entertainment is in Beijing Donglu. Tibet has a lively tradition of performing arts, and these are all on display at the many "langma" (or "nangma") halls around the city. Strictly speaking, nangma is a genre of Tibetan dance music, but the term embraces a colorful form of variety show that visitors often call Tibetan disco, where you are likely to see anything from traditional Tibetan dance to Mandarin pop singing. One popular nangma venue is Xinshiji Langma Hall. For other entertainment options of this kind, there are several other theaters in Lhasa to choose from. If you are looking for a more freewheeling style of fun, it's hard to go past the Tianhai Night Market on Minzu Lu in the west of the city.

When you're planning your Lhasa trip, consider timing it to coincide with one of Tibet's wonderful festivals. One of the greatest is Losar, the Tibetan New Year festival. The weather is cold at night at that time of year (January to mid-February) but you wouldn't want to miss the performances of Tibetan opera, singing competitions or traditional games that make this festival such an exciting time. A little later in the year (late February or March), just at the end of the Great Prayer Festival, the city comes alive to the marvelous Butter Lamp Festival, when golden lamps and elaborate butter sculptures turn the Barkhor into a nighttime fairyland.
