Level 6.5 Earthquake Strikes Xinjiang

Xinjiang’s Pishan county experienced a 6.5 magnitude earthquake at 9:07 am today, according to the China National Seismic Network.

The earthquake originated from a depth of ten thousand meters below Xinjiang’s Pishan county. The city of Hetian (sometimes written as Hotan) was only 161 kilometers from the epicenter. Firefighters in Hetian reported that the shockwaves of the earthquake were very strong and that many people ran down from the upper floors of their buildings to escape danger.

Six lives have been claimed by the earthquake so far.
