Lanzhou City Sprays Water To Eliminate Dust Causes Traffic Accidents After Freezing
Nov 22, 2013 By eChinacities.com

The cold morning of November 18 in Lanzhou proved to be a very dangerous one for the city’s motorists as there were many accidents that took place all throughout the city’s road. Mr Wang, a taxi driver, said he witnessed over 20 accidents with 5 occurring at one intersection alone. Police reported that there were three times more car accidents than usual being reported that morning.

The reason for this is as clear as it is brittle and translucent. Temperatures have dropped below zero, and the city of Lanzhou was covered in a thin sheet of ice. While this may be a reason enough to placate the average layman, your average Lanzhou demanded more: while ice is prone to appear during the winter, why is there so much ice? Where did it come from? And why does it appear that Lanzhou city roads are perfectly covered in ice as though it were scheduled?

That’s because it was scheduled, albeit not for the outcome that resulted. The City of Lanzhou had used water trucks to spray tons of water mist into the air to counteract pollution and dust; when the temperature dropped, the water-covered road surface froze over, leading to many car accidents and fender benders.

If this errant mistake makes Lanzhou motorists so angry that they want to vent, well they can do so knowing that they’re venting into cleaner air.
