A “monster chicken” with six wings and eight legs? Grilled chicken with live maggots? KFC filed a claim against 10 WeChat accounts belonging to three firms in June 2015 that spread rumors online about the fast food giant.

A Shanghai court recently ruled that the three firms must compensate KFC 600,000 Yuan each. A public apology from the companies was posted on Tencent, Sina, Sohu, and other major news portals.

KFC’s lawyers stated, “As of 2015, by the end of April, we found more than 4,000 libelous content articles on WeChat read more than 100,000 times. The earliest was published in 2008.”

KFC took the firms responsible for the content to court and demanded 3.5 million Yuna compensation. The company believed that the sensational stories damaged KFC’s brand image.
