Jammed Stroller Causes Escalator Pile Up- 10 injured

Ten people were injured yesterday after a baby stroller got jammed at the top of an escalator at People’s Square Station.

The accident occurred around 10:00, when a woman, surnamed Shen, took the unfolded stroller on the escalator whilst carrying her baby. When she reached the top, a wheel from the stroller got wedged in the top of the escalator blocking the way. Passengers began to pile up behind her, and as several tried to move backwards, they began to fall on the people behind them.

Someone pushed the emergency button, and the escalator stopped, but not before 10 people, including Shen, were injured. The baby was OK.

Shanghai Metro has advised parents to fold pushchairs before getting on an escalator, or to take the elevator. They also advised people wearing stilettos or loose clothing to take extra care.
