Hurun Report: China Surpasses U.S. in Number of Billionaires

On February 28, Rupert Hoogewerf’s website Hurun Report published its “Global Rich List”. The list identified 1,453 people worldwide who were worth more than 1 billion USD, among them, Mexico’s Carlos Slim Helu was named the world’s richest person with 66 billion USD, followed by Warren Buffet, Amancio Ortega and Bill Gates. Notably, China surpassed the U.S. as the country with the most billionaires—212 as compared to America’s 211. Among China’s 212, most were based out of Hong Kong (54), followed by Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen. Based on industry, the largest proportion of billionaires worked in real estate, followed by telecommunications, investment and retail.
