Hundreds Apply for New Media Position at Shaolin Temple
Sep 09, 2014 By eChinacities.com

Over 300 people have applied for media positions at the Shaolin Temple recently. The advertisements called for a media specialist to help the temple spread news about the temple and Shaolin culture via social media.

The response to the advertisement was overwhelming despite the fact that one of the key requirements of the candidate was an ability to “endure loneliness”. 80 candidates have made it through to the next round after initial screening, many of whom have overseas experience working or studying abroad.

The 1,500 year old temple has come under criticism in recent years for what some consider to be over-commercialisation of the temple; the temple now has nine subsidiary companies, and sells meditation costumes, candles and T-shirts, and the Shaolin Medical Guide is now available to buy on Taobao.

However, the temple’s defenders believe that the so called commercialisation of the temple is essential to its survival in modern times.
