Hohhot Entertainment Overview

Hohhot Entertainment Overview

As with any modern city, Hohhot has a variety of luxury hotels and exciting night spots. The night life cannot compare to the sophisticated scenes in Beijing and Shanghai, but wins over most visitors with its charm and traditional culture. The population in Hohhot has retained a Mongolian flavor, because of which visitors to this small city can enjoy immersing themselves in a new culture in a way not possible in many larger Chinese cities.

Visitors can both watch and take part in the traditional pastimes of camel racing and horse racing as well as the ''Men's Three Skills'' of wrestling, horse racing and archery. One of the largest horse-racing tracks in Asia is situated in Hulun Bei Road: the Inner Mongolia Horse-racing track features polo matches, steeplechase and displays of horsemanship between 7am and 9pm.

In the evenings, the squares in Hohhot fill up with locals watching folk music, dance performances and eating street food such as shouba rou (boiled mutton). Xinhua Square is the most popular square in Hohhot and during festival times, will host large-scale shows. The area around Xinhua Square is crowded with bars including the Naire bar where Mongolian and Chinese songs are sung by local performers and the Shuihua Dao which attracts a youthful crowd.

A variety of theaters in town host traditional dance performances including theWulanqiate Grand Theater or the Rudu (Milk Capital) Theater: the Inner Mongolia Acrobatics Troupe and Inner Mongolia Nationality Music & Dance Opera Troupe tour the area and are both extremely popular

Outside of the urban areas of the city, there are of course many and varied opportunities to enjoy peace and quiet. Visitors can stay with herdsmen in a traditional Mongolian Yurt on the Gegentala or Xilamuren grasslands. Far away from urban areas, the stars shine brightly and the air is clean and fresh.
