Economic development has transformed Hefei from a quiet market town to a vibrant city with a variety of nightlife and entertainment options, including bars and nightclubs, and for the more traditionally inclined teahouses and theaters.

There is a range of bars in Hefei, some suitable for a quiet drink after work, and others offering live music and a vibrant late-night scene. Two popular options for live music are Charlie's Bar on the fourth floor of the Holiday Inn, and Revolutionary on Jin Zhai Lu. Another popular bar is 39 Degrees, on Ma'an Shan Lu. In the same block, YYFace also attracts a lot of late night custom.

The People's Film & Video Recreational Center located at16 Quxi Road has a well-appointed cinema, a concert hall, a musical tea room and a pub. The Huachong Theater has additional leisure activities such as a roller-skating hall, a billiards hall, a chess & card room and a rock-climbing wall besides all kinds of arts performances.

Anhui has a popular and colorful form of musical theater known as Huangmei opera, which originated as a form of hillside folksong and dance about 200 years ago. Hefei offers a number of opportunities to see Huangmei opera. There are nightly performances of Huangmei opera at around 8 pm at the Tea Theater (Chaxilou)on 136 Tongcheng Lu. The theater also features Peking opera, Hui Opera and Lu Opera.

A lot of Hefei's nightlife is concentrated along Ningguo Beilu, also known as lobster street, because of the number of lobster restaurants. There are also bars, karaoke centers, shopping malls and the Anhui Grand Theater, which all combine to create a lively atmosphere..
