Hefei Attractions

Within the environs of Hefei city, there are a number of pleasant parks and gardens that contribute to Hefei's ''garden city'' reputation. The city is also a natural departure point for tours to sights further afield, including the Huangshan mountains, one of the most famous beauty spots in China.

Parks within easy distance of the downtown area include Xiaoyaojin Park, which also has a small zoo, and is adjacent to the Mingjiao Temple, which dates from the 6th century AD. Baohe Park, to the southeast of the city center, contains the Memorial Temple of Lord Bao and Lord Bao's Tomb. Huancheng Park, to the east of the city center, is popular with children because of its amusement amenities. Huancheng Park (which literally means the park surrounding the city) was established when the old city wall was demolished and the ring-road was landscaped after 1949.

The area to the west of the city features a number of natural scenic attractions. The Hefei Botanical Garden is located near Shushan Lake. In the Shushan Mountain Forest Park, a wide variety of mountain trees can be seen in their natural setting. In the Hefei Wildlife Park, visitors can see native and exotic animals in an open environment.

South of the city, at a distance of about eight kilometers, lies Hui Garden, which models the historical and cultural attractions of Anhui province in miniature.

Chaohu Lake is located just south of Hefei city, and is one of the five largest fresh-water lakes in China, measuring 54.5 kilometers from east to west and 21 kilometers from north to south.

About 40 km south of the city lies Sanhe Ancient Town, which has a history stretching back to the Zhou Dynasty. Mount Jiuhua, about 200 km from the capital, is one of China's four sacred Buddhist mountains, and is a major scenic attraction.

The Huangshan mountains, about 400 km from the capital, is on the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage List because of its scenic and cultural significance.
