Hainan Island is recovering today after Typhoon Seagull, or Kalmaegi, made landfall at around 09:40 on Tuesday. The tropical storm brought winds of up to 144 km/h and severe rainfall.

Hundreds of flights were cancelled throughout the island and over 350,000 people had to be evacuated. Ferry services between Hainan and the mainland, and high speed train services were also suspended as a precaution.

Schools, universities and many businesses closed on Tuesday in Haikou as 221 communities across the city lost power.
