According to statistics, Guangzhou's actual population has exceeded 16 million. However, according to previous planning, Guangzhou's population was supposed to be contained within 15 million by 2020. This rapid population growth has exceeded the expected target rate eight years prematurely which could put strains on Guangzhou's urban development.
