Guangzhou City now plans to levy taxes for construction sites that stir up too much dust according to the Guangzhou Daily. The policy is set to take effect on by the end of August as part of Guangdong Province’s efforts to fight air pollution.

The issue has come to the fore of public debate recently when statistics were released recently showing the rising rates of lung cancer in Guangzhou. The city has 792 ongoing construction projects, 8 of which have been targeted by local authorities for causing excessive dust pollution.

The move comes as part of a nationwide effort to reduce the problem of PM2.5 emissions, with Guangdong Province, one of the worst offenders vowing to lower its annual PM2.5 concentration by 15 by 2017.
