Guangzhou to Implement Traffic Restrictions on Polluted Days

The Guangzhou Environmental Protection Bureau released a notice on new measures to try and curb the city’s serious pollution problem. The report stated that on heavily polluted days the city will implement alternate number plate restrictions, similar to the system that has been operating in Beijing over the past few years.

This means that restrictions on cars will be implemented depending on the last number of the number plate. Odd numbers will be banned from the roads if the polluted day falls on Monday Wednesday or Friday, and even numbers will be restricted Tuesday and Saturday. The restrictions won’t apply to public transport, emergency services vehicles or vehicles registered with news agencies.
