Currently, Guangzhou taxis are in five different colors: red, yellow, blue, green and gold. The different colors differentiate between taxi companies, although all companies use the same charging system.

Taxis are the best option for those who need to get somewhere quickly or who don't know the city very well. Rates start at 10 RMB for the first 2.5 km, with a 2.6 RMB increase per km after that.

Contrary to recent publicity, most taxis still don’t accept Yangchengtong cards for payment. Passengers will be charged 26 RMB per hour for waiting and for when low speed operations are necessary. Rides over 35 km are subject to a 50% added “time spent returning” charge.

Tips

Ask for the receipt for the taxi fare in case valuables are lost during the ride. Travelers attempting to claim lost items must show a receipt.

As compared with other Chinese cities, taxis are scarce in Guangzhou, even during non-peak hours.

Taxi drivers in Guangzhou are fairly honest, but remember to make sure the meter is running to avoid an argument at the end of the trip. Very few taxi drivers speak English, so if you are not familiar with the city be sure to have the address written down in Chinese characters.
