The Guangzhou Opera House will be performing Georges Bizet’s beloved classic, Carmen, this June. The opera, which is an adaptation of a novella by Mérimée, tells the story of a beautiful gypsy girl and her love affair with a soldier.
The composer died before the end of Carmen’s first run, and so never knew the opera’s astounding success. The music of Carmen is so integrated into our lives and culture that it is recognizable to young and old, and people from every facet of society.
The performance will be conducted by Daniel Oren, a protégé of the great Leonard Bernstein, and feature Anna Caterina Antonacci (June 27/29) and Allyson McHardy, (June 28) in the title role.
