Emergency services were called out at around 10:00 on Monday morning after a 20 year old man wearing a black shirt and jeans climbed onto the steel framework above the Haizhu Bridge in Yuexiu District.

Observers feared it was a suicide attempt, but the man didn’t attempt to make any statements or demands, instead just taking off his shirt. Rescue workers placed crash mats below the man and tried shouting up to him but the man ignored them and dozed off, leaning his head on the crossbar of the structure.

As the man didn’t seem to have any intent to harm himself or anyone else, the rescue workers disbanded with 4 remaining behind to monitor the situation. According to people.com, they waited around watching the man doze on the bridge all day, until about 19:30 when they got firefighters to go up with a ladder and retrieve the man.

Police are currently investigating the incident.
