Atletico Madrid has sold Colombian striker Jackson Martinez to Guangzhou Evergrande in a deal worth 300 million Yuan (42 million Euros). The deal was announced this morning.

42 million Euros is a huge sum for a Chinese team to spend on a player. However, Chinese teams have recently been paying out for big-name South American players. On January 27, Jiangsu Suning purchased Brazilian striker Ramires for 28 million Euros.

This winter, Guangzhou Evergrade announced that they plan to sell star Brazilian striker Elkeson to Shanghai SIPG for 18.5 million Euros. Martinez will have to step up and fill the hole left by Elkeson.

Martinez played three seasons with Porto. Despite the team willing the Portuguese championships, Martinez struggled to score.

While playing for Atletico Madrid, his overall record was a mere 3 goals in 22 games. The team purchased his contract for 35 million Euros.
