If you live in Guangzhou, don’t be alarmed when you hear sirens on September 27, as this will be part of an annual civil defense exercise.

The test will have three phases and starts at 11:20, with a preparation alarm. The first alarm will last 36 seconds, and be followed by a 24 second pause. This will be repeated three times.

Then, the second phase, will consist of the main air strike siren, which will follow a few minutes later and sound for six seconds, followed by a six second pause. This part will be repeated 15 times.

The third phase is a siren that will sound constantly for three minutes to indicate the end of the air raid. The entire test will finish at 11:43.

Air raid messages will also be broadcast on the radio and TV, and mobile phone operators will send out messages to remind people of the exercise. But authorities have reminded people that their lives should continue normally.
