A higher court in Guangdong stated that drugs were in high demand last year and that the entire province now has documentation of over 457 thousand drug users. A large amount of prosecuted drug cases from last year were ones that involved minuscule amounts of drugs.

18% of drug offenders from January 2014 to May 2015 that received heavy punishments were repeat offenders. Drug related cases with repeat offenders were 8.9% greater than all other types of cases with repeat offenders. 857 people of such cases were either sentenced to life in prison or the death penalty over that period of time.

It was also reported that in eight years, nearly 400 foreign nationals have been convicted in Guangdong for crimes related to drugs. Those convicted mostly came from Southeast Asian and African nations.
