We knew food prices were rising in China, though it seems Shanghai has taken the biscuit with a pair of apples on sale for 1,988 RMB each at Ole, a high-end supermarket in the city’s Xuhui District. Named “Great Star Treasures,” the apples feature a yellow snake pattern and a “2013” engraved into the skin, and apparently originate from Japan. The apples have generated hot debate online with one netizen quipping “just one bite and you’ve already blown a few hundred RMB. Crazy!”
