Golden Week: Japan an Increasingly Popular Destination, Hong Kong Less So

4 million Chinese tourists will travel outside the country during this year’s upcoming National Day Golden Week vacation. This is an increase of 11.1 percent from numbers last year.

Tickets abroad are more expensive during the seven day break. Ticket prices rose 16 percent during Golden Week, and 4 percent from last year’s Golden Week prices.

Popular travel destinations include traditional destinations South Korea, Japan, Thailand as well as France, Italy, Switzerland, Turkey and the United States.

The most popular countries and regions for Chinese tourists during Golden Week in the past are South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, the United States, Hong Kong. South Korea has become the most popular Golden Week destination, followed by Japan.

Tourists to Japan have increased by 40 percent since 2014, while tourism to Hong Kong has decreased by approximately 40 percent in the same period. Tourism to Taiwan has slightly increased. The most popular cities for Chinese tourists are Seoul, Taipei, Hong Kong, Kaohsiung, Tokyo, Jeju, and Osaka.
