Golden Hackney Cabs Launched in Shanghai

A Shanghai taxi company has gone in direct defiance of the old adage, ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’, by launching their own versions of the classic London Hackney Cabs.

Driven by flashy drivers in waistcoats, these cabs are an exact copy of the London versions, just painted gold to fit in with the city’s image, because shiny = glamorous.

The cabs began roaming the streets of the city on Saturday and have caused quite a stir so far. The cabs have a starting rate of 19 RMB- 5 RMB more than that of ordinary cabs-and the fare will increase 2.6 RMB per kilometer. Bookings need to be made one day in advance.

Besides their resplendent exterior, the cabs also offer free Wi-Fi service and an air cleaning system, and can be paid for with Alipay or traffic cards.
