In 2014, China had the second largest amount of grape production acreage in the world, behind only Spain. The International Organization of Vine and Wine said that in 2012, China was fifth in the world for wine production. Although it slipped to ninth in 2014, China still produced more wine than both Germany and Portugal.

In the past 20 years, Chinese wine consumption has more than doubled. In 2014, China consumed about 160 million liters of wine, and was ranked fifth in the world for wine consumption. Chinese prefer red wine, and the majority of wine consumed in China is red. Vinexpo, the international wine and spirits fair, reported that China became the world’s top consumer of red wine in 2013, surpassing France and Italy.

Wine expert Lu Jiang said that as China’s economy continues to improve, the wine boom will continue. While not many people in China consume wine daily, they tend to choose red wine for celebrations like New Year’s, weddings, and banquets.

Fake wine has become an issue in the Chinese industry. Chinese media reported that last year 50,000 bottles of fake Bordeaux wine were seized in Yantai. Cheap brands will put the labels of expensive brands on their wine to try to trick customers. Counterfeit wine can be purchased for as low as 10 Yuan a bottle.
