Pictures of an elderly man in the post office counting piles of 1 RMB banknotes have gone viral on Chinese social media. The man allegedly earns his money begging in the city, and generally makes up to 10,000 RMB a month, with this number reaching 20,000 RMB on holidays.

Beijing News reported the news and printed the photos of him counting the money in a post office before he sent it back to his hometown in Jiangsu province.

The post office employees know him and help him count his money, as he has been coming by for years. Apparently he has earned enough to put three of his hometown’s students through university, and build a two story house for his family.

a lovely propaganda piece showing the kind benevolence of beijing bureaucrats, and at the same time discouraging any people from showing human kindness - china wants none of that. it goes against divide and conquer. the man naturally has no objection to his money making scam being advertised, because for sure people will keep giving after reading this. makes perfect sense unless you actually think about it. there are laws against begging, and if this were real it neglects to mention how the man could get away with it. does he have guanxi with a local official? is a mobster taking a big cut, or perhaps a street cop? 100% bogus article.
