An old man in Hubei province’s extremely unusual medical problem has caught the attention of the Chinese blogosphere recently. Li Zhibing, aged 62, has an extremely rare condition where a horn grows out of his neck at a right angle. His fellow villagers’ solution to this? They hack it off with a saw every six months.

The problem started in 1980 when he noticed something growing on his neck and so went to the mountains to pick some herbs to heal it. The sore initially healed, but ever since then, a horn has been growing out of the side of his neck.

The horn is normally harmless but when it gets too long it may cause problems such as fever, pain and swelling, so every six months he just gets someone to saw it off.

Li Zhibing says his lifelong dream is to work out what exactly is growing out of his neck.

if he can gring the horn into powder, he can make is own TCM to sell. maybe with the profits from the rare human horn aphrodisiac, he can visit a real doctor! seriously, though, i can only hope it's some freaky teratoma. if it's a foreign organism growing into his spine, he's a goner.
