Cyclists Rejoice: Beijing Plans New 3,200 Km Bike Path
Apr 26, 2016 By eChinacities.com

Beijing Municipal Committee of Transportation director Zhou Zhengyu announced Sunday at a conference for sports and bicycling in Beijing that the city plans to construct a continuous 3,200 kilometer bike path within the Fifth Ring Road by the 2020 Olympics.

The city plans to improve access for both cyclists and pedestrians. In busy areas, the bike paths will include raised pathways to make navigating and crossing busy streets safer and easier.

In addition, Beijing says traffic police will crackdown on motorized vehicles driving and parking in bike lanes. Beijing cyclists often have to dodge parked cars who have stopped in bike lanes. This is a big issue in the city and threatens the safety of cyclists.

Zhou hopes that the new bike lanes will help ease Beijing’s traffic congestion. In 2016, the city will also add 10,000 new public bicycles including 3,000 in Haidian district.
