Chinese Internet Information Office Director Chats with Mark Zuckerberg in Mandarin

Chinese Internet Information Office Director Chats with Mark Zuckerberg in Mandarin

Lu Wei – the man who has his fingers in seemingly every internet related department in China including the Central Propaganda Department, China's State Internet Information Office and the Central Internet Security and Information Leading Group – recently led an official delegation to attend the 7th China-US Internet Forum in the US. The official visit also took him to the offices of the “all-so-threatening” Facebook.

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, who has been displaying a fondness of speaking Mandarin of late, accompanied Lu Wei on his visit and tactfully showed off his Chinese language skills. He pointed to an office station by the lobby and said, “This is mine,” in Chinese. Lu Wei smiled and asked, “Can I sit down?” nodding towards Zuckerberg’s desk. At Zuckerberg’s work station, Lu Wei found writings by Chinese president Xi Jinping. Zuckerberg explained in Mandarin, “I bought this book for a colleague. I want to make them understand socialism with Chinese characteristics.” Nice move!

Perhaps sometime this decade Mark’s smooth talking will lead to the unblocking of Facebook. Here’s to hoping anyway!

I'm wondering whether Mr. Lu's kids have access to the those dreadful Western internet sites ... I'm guessing they must be happy with their limited and carefully edited news. Give them time.
