China's Doctors Are Underpaid, Overworked, and Sick of It

Only 6.15% of doctors in China make more than 10,000 Yuan a month, according to a recent survey published by the Beijing Times yesterday afternoon.

The survey reported that 57.2% of doctors work 40-60 hours per week, and 32.69% work more than 60 hours per week.

Overtime work has become the norm for doctors in China: the majority of doctors work overtime, especially high level doctors who work at hospitals.

Chinese doctors are not happy with this situation. In 2014, 65.9% of doctors were not satisfied with their income and 19.1% were “very dissatisfied.”

59.8% of medical staff had been the target of violent language and 13.1% have been physically hurt by patients. Only 27.1% of medical staff have never encountered violence on the job.

The survey was done by the Chinese Medical Association Health Communication Professional Committee in Beijing. The “White Paper,” survey is a result of an analysis of three other surveys done in 2009, 2011, and 2014.

Another question might be... How many Chinese doctors are actually doctors?

The official incomes of doctors are lower than their true take home pay - the more senior the doctor the more true this is. I know lots of doctors in China due to my work and some freely admit to taking hongbaos from patients. Often the younger doctors don't get to keep them and they go to department heads. I know someone who is the head of a department at a hospital who made almost 2 million rmb last year - her official salary was probably around 10k a month plus 70 rmb per procedure she performed. I know she performed about 1,800 procedures (she works very hard) so rounding up to 100 rmb per procedure that's 180k + 120k in salary = 300k per year. Now let's assume that each patient she performed the procedures on threw her another 500 - 1000 rmb hongbao. You can see how she easily made over 100k per month. Not to mention all of the baskets of fruit, shellfish and tea that she gets in gifts from patients. I know that some young doctors get shafted with low salaries but a lot of doctors are VERY wealthy in China. The funny thing is, the doctor I know complains she doesn't make enough because department heads in the US would be making more. Yea, I don't really feel bad for her.

Doctors get Hongbao's... many Chinese doctors have admitted this to me. And many of them are indifferent to patients who don't give them a hongbao, hence the patients becoming angry and violent as doctors SHOULD NOT require a hongbao to apply quality service. Who are you trying to fool Beijing Times?

"according to ... the Beijing Times," why read any further? Seems they neglected to mention the THOUSANDS of yuan (RMB) doctors make from nicely sealed red envelopes given to them by patients hoping to keep the doctors awake during procedures. In reality, it's not uncommon for doctors to make 20k+.
