China Publishes Pictures of Earth and Moon From Lunar Orbiter

This Monday, China published incredible photos of the earth and moon that were taken by the unmanned lunar orbiter that recently returned to earth.

The photos were taken on Sunday 540,000 km from the earth, and 920,000 km from the moon after being separated from the capsule on November 1, ending a mission that lasted eight days.

The orbiter was part of one of the first space missions in about 40 years, and the project has made China the third nation to get there after the Soviet Union and the United States.

This project was part of a test run for the final chapter of China’s lunar mission that will involve orbiting, landing, retrieving lunar samples, and returning. This is expected to happen around 2017.

"The orbiter was part of one of the first space missions in about 40 years". Space missions to the Moon ? There have been plenty of them during the 90's, 2000's and the current decade. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exploration_of_the_Moon
