Bus in Xinjiang Crashes Killing 22 in Series of End of Holiday Disasters

The country has seen a series of accidents and disasters as the Spring Festival rush draws to a close and people return home from their holidays.

In Chengdu, a tunnel exploded and collapsed on the afternoon of February 24, killing 1 and injuring 20. The tunnel was under construction at the time and the blast is thought to have been caused by gas pipes. Two were seriously injured.

Meanwhile, the Xiamen-Chengdu Expressway also saw a nine-vehicle pileup on February 25, in which two people died. Two more were injured in the accident which blocked the highway for several hours and caused a 10-km-long queue.

On Tuesday night, a bus travelling in the Kashgar Prefecture of Xinjiang overturned at around 23:30, killing 22 and injuring 38. The cause of the accident is still unknown.

I left Kashgar on that day, Tuesday...luckily for me it was by plane. Sad news indeed.
