The Shanghai local government will pay 800,000 RMB in compensation to each family of the 36 people who died in the Bund New Year’s Eve stampede.

The 49 who were injured will also receive payouts according to the severity of their injuries.

The news comes as 11 officials were sacked, demoted or otherwise punished over the incident which shocked the world and seriously damaged Shanghai’s international image as China’s most developed and modern city.

An initial investigation into the incident blames poor urban management and a lack of security for the tragedy.

In a public apology to the victims’ families, Zhou Bo, the deputy mayor of Shanghai said, “The tragedy should never have happened and could have been prevented”.

Shanghai is far from international. No Chinese city will ever be international as long as the Chinese government keeps blocking western influence and the people act like peasants.

".....seriously damaged Shanghai’s international image as China’s most developed and modern city." Yeah, that RMB800,000 per family would provide the next shock and restore the lost face. What a 'wonderful culture'!
