Brief Intro to Hohhot Shopping

Like most larger Chinese centers, there is a wide range of department stores and shopping plazas that sell a range of conventional domestic and international brands. There are a number of districts in Hohhot that are home to these stores. More interesting are the local products available in Hohhot, from all around Inner Mongolia.

Notable products from Mongolia are the Mongolian knives and carpets, cashmere, Balin stone and Mongolian metalwork, particularly the examples in silver. These items can be found in large dedicated shopping centers, though it is perhaps a more interesting cultural experience (and most likely cheaper) to buy them at local markets. Other Chinese souvenirs like calligraphy, jade, porcelain and woodcarvings can be found in all of the touristy areas as well as some of the department stores. Places like the Inner Mongolia Antique Shop (on Xilin Beilu) cater to the tourist trade, and tend to have a good selection of local products all in one place, though the prices are higher that you could get after bargaining in a market.
