Brief Intro to Hohhot Dining

Hohhot, being a capital city, has a range of restaurants that specialize in all of the different types of food from around China and the World. Tasty Sichuan and Guangdong restaurants can be found, as well as Western food and local Mongolian fare.

Traditionally, the Mongolian way of life was one of nomadic herding, and much of the region's food stems from this lifestyle. There is a heavy reliance on lamb and mutton, milk and grains. Though these influences are still felt in the Mongolian cuisine of today, there are a few welcome additions that came with the Han migration to the region, most notably, the inclusion of fresh fruits and vegetables. Perhaps the most famous Mongolian staple is the omnipresent hotpot, made with mutton or beef. Apart from hotpot, roasted leg of lamb and the 'all-fish banquet' are favorites that add to the tasty range of Mongolian foods, along with 'finger mutton' and shaomai.

If you find yourself in a Mongolian home, please note that guests are expected to wait to be served by the host, who will select cuts of meat for you based on your seniority. Spending a night in a traditional yurt with a Mongolian family is a unique experience that is not to be missed.
