Beijing Requests Vatican Joint Bishop Reviews

Beijing Requests Vatican Joint Bishop Reviews
Nov 21, 2014 By eChinacities.com

The Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association (CCPA), the association of people appointed by the Religious Affairs Bureau to supervise China’s Catholics,  has asked to review bishop appointments jointly with the Vatican.

The Vatican has previously expressed that it hopes China will cancel the CCPA, but Shen Guiping, a religious studies expert at the Central Institute of Socialism in China was quoted in Ecns as saying that China would not do so, but that its role may be altered slightly. “For example, the CCPA may strengthen its role as an independent group to bridge the gap between authorities and church members”.

History between the two is tense, as China severed diplomatic relations with the Vatican in the 1950s, although changes may be underway as evident in Pope Francis’ greeting to China as he flew over China earlier this year.
