Beijing, Beijing West, Beijing South and Beijing North will be patrolled by armed police from June 22. The policemen were issued pistols this week as a part of a nationwide anti-terror campaign.

The police have also been equipped with patrol dogs and riot gear. Violent attacks have been occurring with alarming frequency across the country in the past six months, most notably in April, when armed men stormed a train station in Kunming, killing 29 and injuring 143.
