Around One Fifth of China’s Arable Land is Polluted

The results from a study conducted between 2005 and 2013 have been released and it doesn’t look good. The findings show that 16 percent of China’s soil is heavily polluted, with the figure around 20 percent for arable land.

The pollutants feature 13 kinds of inorganic substances with heavy metals as the headline act. Just being aware of the situation is not enough as experts say that they are not too optimistic about the soil recovering as formerly used industrial areas struggle to recover. The pollutants affect the quality of the farmed products and can be seriously detrimental to human health.

The size of the polluted arable land, to give some perspective, is nearly the size of Belgium at 3.33 million hectares. China faces an uphill battle in an attempt to try and clear the heavens and the earth of pollution.
