The area of Suzhou is about 8488 km2, and has a total population of about 10.47(2010) million. Of the resident population, 5,338,100 are males, accounting for 51.00% of the total population; 5,127,900 are females, accounting for 49.00% of the total population. 53 of China's 55 recognised ethnic minority groups are represented in the city, with the majority being the Hui, Zhuang, Korean, Miao and Tujia groups. On the whole, 0.86 percent of the total population is made up of minority groups.
