The tiny city of Sanya occupies approximately 1,915 square kilometers of land in the southern tip of the Hainan Province. Its coastline stretches over 258.65 kilometers. The city's population is a little over 685,000, made up of 20 nationalities including Han, Li (188,000[2008]), Hui (9,000[2008]) and Miao (4,300[2008]) people. Among the residents, there are 0.363 million males and 0.3219 million females, accounting for 53.02% and 46.98% of the total population respectively.
