The Prefecture of Lhasa covers an area of nearly 30,000 square km, and the downtown area is 60 square km. The 2010 population of the Prefecture was 0.559 million. Of the resident population, males are 0.287 million, accounting for 51.38% and females are 0.272 million, accounting for 48.62%. The Tibetan ethnic group makes up 87 percent of the total population; other groups include Han, Hui and a number of smaller minorities.
