The area of the whole Hefei Prefecture is 7,500 km2, which includes an urban area of 838.52 km2. By the end of 2010, the population of Hefei has reached 5.7 million. The population of the urban area has increased by 27.65 percent in the last ten years and now stands at 3.88 million. Of the total resident population, 2.98 million are males, accounting for 52.30% and 2.72 million are females, accounting for 47.70%.
There are 43 ethnic groups in Hefei with the ethnic population accounting for less than 0.6% of the total. Among the 43 ethnic groups, Hui People are the largest followed by Manchu. Most of the Manchu live in Feixi County of Hefei.
