The touching story of a 93 year old grandma who finally found the memorial of her long-dead husband for the first time was all over the Chinese blogosphere this week.

Zhang Shuying and Zhong Chongxin met in 1935 when she was only 14 years old. The two quickly fell in love and got married.

Their happiness was short lived however, when Zhong left to fight in the Sino-Japanese war. On their parting, she told reporters “He cried and promised he would come back for me.” That was the last time they saw each other.

She received one phone call from Zhong, but heard no word after that. She waited for him for seven years until 1944 when she bumped into one of his fellow soldiers on the street who informed her that he had died.

Zhang remarried and had children but she never forgot Zhong. She finally told her children about him in 1988, telling them, “My husband treated me very well, but Chung was my first love, one which I will never forget; I only wish to know where his grave is.”

Her son started on a decades long search and made a major break through when he saw a volunteer group for war veterans in September. They tracked down a photo of Zhong and discovered that his remains were interred at the Revolutionary Martyr’s Shrine in Taipei.

On November 22, Zhang spent seven days in Taipei to visit the shrine and broke down in tears, saying “I’ve finally found you”.
