2 Foreigner Rescued After Wandering Away from Great Wall Music Festival

The Great Wall Music Festival was held during the evening on Saturday, May 11 at the Juyongguan section of the Great Wall, north of Beijing. After the event, an American man and a Spanish woman skipped out on the shuttle ride back into the city center, instead deciding to go hiking around the surrounding mountainous area, where they promptly proceeded to get lost.

As neither of the lost foreigners understand Chinese, they called up a Chinese-speaking friend of theirs to help them get rescued, but unfortunately they were not familiar with the area so they couldn’t say where exactly they were located. Luckily their cell phone was fully charged and had a pretty good signal, so the authorities were able to work their phone tracing magic to find their approximate location, at which time a search party was sent out.

On May 12 at 04:00, firefighters arrived at the location and planned their climb up the mountain to the foreigners’ location. By 05:30, the rescue team managed to find the foreigners who were on the verge of collapsing. By 11:00 that morning, they had safely descended the mountain and were in the firefighters’ care. Upon initial inspection, they were both physically exhausted but had sustained no apparent injuries.
