16 Species of Wild Animals in Xinjiang Dangerously Close to Extinction
Jan 05, 2016 By eChinacities.com

The Xinjiang Academy of Ecology’s Institute of Forest Wildlife and Wetlands Research Center recently released a list of 99 endangered wild animal species present in the region. 16 animals on the list are dangerously near extinction including the saiga antelope and mustang horse.

Xinjiang is one of the most biologically diverse areas in China, with a total of 731 species of vertebrates. 10.01 percent of wild vertebrates in China live in Xinjiang.

A variety of species have evolved to form unique groups in Xinjiang because of its complex natural composition. Certain types of salamanders, beavers, and more are unique to the area.

However, Xinjiang’s wildlife is now threatened by human activity, environmental pollution, climate change, and other factors. The region’s diverse wildlife population is on the decline, and some species are close to disappearing.
