14,000 People Have Died of Aids in China this Year

On October 20, the 2014 Aids Academic Exchange Conference took place in Beijing. According to comprehensive statistics presented at the conference, this year, between January and August 70,000 people in were infected with HIV, resulting in 14,000 AIDS related deaths.

40 percent of these were long time sufferers, who had contracted the illness for 5 years or more. Currently, 96.2 percent of counties across the whole of China have reported AIDS cases, and each of the 12 provinces have reported 10,000 or more cases of surviving AIDS patients, most notably in Yunnan, Guangxi, Sichuan and Henan.

In total, there are currently an estimated 490,000 people living with AIDS in mainland China.
