13 North Korean employees at a restaurant in Ningbo defected to South Korea last Friday. Seoul’s Ministry of Unification announced on Friday that the group of North Koreans had defected to Seoul but did not give any details on the route they had taken.

The defectors had worked at a North Korean restaurant called Liu Jing in Ningbo, Zhejiang. The staff had reportedly disappeared from the restaurant at 6 am on April 5. The restaurant has since been closed and is under investigation.

The North Korean staff members previously worked in a restaurant in Jilin near the border of China and North Korea before being transferred to Ningbo a few months ago. Chinese media reported that their defection may have been in part due to the international sanctions on North Korea and their effect on North Korean state-owned restaurants.

The Korean Embassy reported that the 13 employees entered South Korea through Southeast Asia. They did not arrive directly from China to South Korea.

The North Korean government currently operates more than 130 restaurants overseas. More than 100 of them are located in China, and the rest are in Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, and other countries.
